There are many favourites on that list and I am lucky that many were introduced to me during ‘Eng. Lit.” classes at secondary school.
We were a couple of chapters into Lord of the Flies when our then English teacher asked for suggestions on where Golding got his material for the boys and their characters. One boy who shall remain nameless suggested they appeared to be a typical class of unruly schoolboys….and indeed Golding had been a former English teacher at the school which I attended in Salisbury, Wiltshire.
