Work in=results out.

Put the work in and you will get the results. But it's not quite as straightforward as a high school physics experiment. There may be lag (a lot), there will undoubtedly be resistance (interfaces are rarely smooth) and you might well drop the ball. 

But the formula holds. Just get back in the game.
