The Beatles launched as masters of simplicity: simple lyrics - she loves you, disarmingly simple yet elegant chords, simple smart suits, straightforward honest simple banter with the press. A simple business model: tour, record. Record, tour. But when their world changed with Candlestick Park and the realisation that simplicity had become drudgery they started climbing a path - which would ultimately amaze the world of their fans - of increasing complexity. Time to think which generated buzzing ideas. Studios which had clever stuff hidden in the cupboards. White-coated gurus who could actually be cajoled into talking to you and help you do very interesting things with sounds. And George Martin's classical music background was becoming increasingly useful after all. And there was money for all kinds of treats like whole orchestras. With every new studio album the heights were scaled. Again. Eventually of course they would need to return to simplicity and their roots with Get Back and Abbey Road. But in the meantime it was all going to happen in a spectacular. Not just music but the the album cover. Not just an album cover but give-aways, too. Not just songs but a whole epic story within a story. The lads from Liverpool were hatching something and it would become know as Sergeant Pepper. It would astound its audience.
That’s another reason we love The Beatles.
