Finding myself doing a lot of international travel and enjoying walking and exploring I once decided to do a self-defense course. It was fun, useful and stimulating.
The two critical tips for me were:
- Carry a false wallet/purse. This has some (old, scratched) credit cards and some notes for credibility and it's the one you give up reluctantly when asked 'for your money'. By the time they discover it's useless you are somewhere safe.
- Act early. If anything happens to you there is a temptation to wait for the situation to get better. Generally speaking it won't: it'll get worse.
The latter was a powerful message: act early. For any of our compass points*: career, relationships, health...it's generally a good strategy to act early.
Now go have fun creating that wallet/purse in readiness for your next trip.
