Meditation and massage. Incense and vegetarian food. Early rising and chanting. Talks from Maharishi and no journalists. The Beatles were in India.
It was just what they needed after an extensive time on the road. They were established, 'toppermost of the poppermost', beginning to see real money, acclaimed around the world. And well and truly exhausted. Deep rest, sleep and a detox lifestyle were just what they needed to take their already astounding creativity up to totally new level. Whether or not Maharishi was the real thing, the change in lifestyle did the trick. The full identities of The Beatles were being realised and released. For George, he discovered this what what it was all about and he never lost his affection for this lifestyle and made a spiritual life a central one; it of course had a profound influence on his song-writing especially in his solo career. For Paul, this was a pretty cool way of generating an astounding number of songs, some even without his buddy John. For John this was the start of some pretty serious stress release, much of which when coupled with a heady cocktail of drugs would cause him a few challenges in the latter part of his career as a Beatle. For Ringo: well, it sure beats Liverpool.
The identikit band - awesomely talented as it was - was about to undergo a metamorphosis. School Uniform was out. Dress down Life was in. Play that Sitar, George.
That's another reason we love The Beatles.
