If you have ever driven at high speed for several hours without taking a proper break in a car which is insufficiently powered for the job, the inner voice normally initially issues caveats: this is crazy....take a break...slow down....upgrade your hire car. But before long the brain has accepted the new reality: it's wired to do that to aid short-term survival. Exhaustion signals are missed and ignored, decision-making degrades rapidly and 'other drivers are the unprofessional ones'. Assuming the driver survives his/her journey, once home it's difficult to adjust to normal pace, calm the 'hyped' body and resist the quick-fix balm of junk TV...
