Batch process your e-mail rather than interact with it continuously. Yes, yes, yes: we know that.
But why?
- The e-mail interrupt so often breaks thinking, concentration, reflection and/or an involved conversation. These are often very high payoff and difficult to re-access after an interrupt.
- E-mail is addictive. The more we check it, the more we check it. And the less work we actually get done.
- Frequent e-mails which need an instant response are often a symptom of something deeper: poor planning.
Check e-mail occasionally not continuously.
