A plan so pragmatic a seasoned gardener would predict a good harvest. Yep, you could take pencil and paper and heave not a single sigh nor shrug the shoulders nor whisper an anguished 'if'. Just a pencil, a piece of paper and a plan.

You could.

And ditch the stuff from last week you detested.

Sometimes you read something short and succinct and you think aahhh, yes! You get re-grounded. Things aren't so bad after all. We all need a personal mantra: something which when we re-read it we are reminded of our purpose and what we are trying to achieve. It's good to keep in the wallet or purse or travel pass. When we sit for a coffee, scan the mantra before we scan our phone for messages and updates.

Of course it had to be on the list. Who hasn't been delighted at the versatility of the well made device and its ability to keep the party going (open cans and bottles), patch the tent leak (cut and sew) or remove snakes from restaurants (private correspondence with blog reader).

So many of us used to carry one with us at all times. In the days after 9/11 there were greater and heavier concerns but it was the end of the accessible knife in your bag; mine disappeared with so many others into crates of knives, fluids and miscellaneous helpful items.

But you can still have one on your desk. Or your check-in bag.

In a world of distraction, overload and busyness sometimes the essential tool is nothing. The empty room. If you must have a table and chair, so be it.
