'Follow Your Passion', seems the neatest, most appealing and ultimately obvious career advice any of us can stumble upon. Until we start trying to work out what that passion actually is. For a few it is of course obvious from the time they enter life. But the rest of us?
No. Better advice is work damn hard at whatever and everything you do: most of that will feel like hard work however some of it will feel a little timeless and in a funny kind of way satisfying. Get very good at the latter and you will find you are passionate about it.
Like much in life, the end result reveals little about the strategy to access that point. Those who do love what they do will say as a shorthand they followed their passion. In reality their career wandered, stalled, took off then went down a few cul-de-sacs but along the way they worked hard at some things and discovered, heck: I could make not only a living but also a life out of this.
