Ask most people about productivity and they'll maybe talk about getting stuff done. The more astute will maybe mention getting the right things done. Few will talk about being in the right state, being in the right zone, being in the 'right place'. There's a state-and we have all been there-where nothing 'productive' is getting done and with luck we recognise it's best to leave it for another day. There's also a state where the world is ours: focus, energy and rhythm. Ironically the more we care to be producing (a bit of a numbers game) the more we can spoil our most productive state (a thinking game). All Olympic athletes will have recognised that they have done all they can on their numbers: they have covered the kilometres, lifted the kilogrammes and leapt the hurdles. Now it's over to their thinking. Their peak performance will be a function of their peak state: focus, energy and rhythm. And how will they do that? Rest, rituals and self-discipline. How easily we squander all three in the world of business.
