It's easy for anyone in an organisation to begin to think after a while that their sole purpose is answer the phone, repel e-mail and read slide-decks. Hence the usefulness of say a mission statement; it's something which when read reminds us (and the customer) what we are about. The Geek Squad (the IT support guys) has a brand statement for example which is "we'll save your ass". It's worth spending time to get a clear, up-lifting purpose.
