Spent an inspiring day off Victoria, Vancouver Island whale watching. These glorious creatures are a marvel to watch as they race, breech and get on with their lives. It is truly staggering to learn that in the 1970s some 45 of these creatures were taken from these very waters to be placed in acquaria around the world. As with much in Life there is a big difference between observing to learn (great idea) and interfering and spoiling a delicate balance (too easily done). Of those 45, a third were lost immediately on the journey and the rest bar one were dead within a few years. Only one is still alive and yet in their natural habitat whales can live into their 90s.
