The back story: a studio
album. Sprawling, majestic, quirky, 90% individual contributions, innovative as
ever. Some weak (in Beatles terms) overly personal/inside-joke tracks saved by
a brilliantly programmed overall
sequence which is the best way to listen to this album: in its entirety. Called
The White Album.
Disc 1/Side 2: nine songs. Martha My Dear: great song,
but less tangible story compared to the usual McCartney (remember Yesterday
started as ‘scrambled eggs’ until he 'found' the words); I’m So Tired: A Lennon
personal favourite; Blackbird: no real evidence for the oft suggested metaphor for the black civil rights movement. Simply a beautiful song created out of exploration in India and still a Sir Paul favourite on tour; Piggies;
Rocky Raccoon; Don’t Pass Me By: Starr’s first solo composition containing a clear long-standing plea in the title; Why Don’t We Do
It in The Road? Sir Paul being mischievous; I will: a seemingly simple track, it required close on 70 takes and illustrates some of the dedication only the lads could provide and were still willing to do so at
this stage; Julia: heavily personal- at times too much so- from Lennon. An indication of the style we at times get in his later personal work.
Majestic, sprawling: listen to in its entirety. Up-date your play-list to include all of disc 1. And you''ll understand:
That's another reason we love The Beatles.
