He left the building and crossed to the park. It was odd this bug he had; he simply wasn’t able to get rid of it. It was really flu-like. He popped a paracetamol and sat on a park bench. His body certainly felt odd. Their USP had been price. The competition’s was service. The decision criteria were weighted to price so long as they hit the service thresholds. However, now neither potential supplier could offer excellence on price. So, they’d better become outstanding on service. Here was the strategy, then: maintain a small price lead. It would still be a large saving on such a larger order, but totally re-position service. And that’s what he would do. That was the paradigm-shift which was needed. He had wanted to wait until he got his formal directorship to tackle it, but now was the perfect time: he’d tackle it now. That would delight the customer and commit the organisation to the service levels he needed. The work-load would be a killer, but he could create the frame-work over the week-end. This new emphasis would simply re-strengthen his personal credibility.
