Jo was always an early riser: the first coffee of the day was not longer after 0500. He’d learnt a couple of things: those who rose early kept themselves to themselves in those early hours; that between 0500-0800 you could get more done than many did in a week. He also reckoned he was optimistic by nature but today he felt very good: he had a new sense of mission, he had slept better than he had a long time and although the challenges were enormous such as simply convincing the board to take 7 high flyers out of the main stream business for close on 12 months, he was up for it and felt confident.
He’d been through his diary and stripped it back.
Today was about Mission HQ: they needed somewhere out of the main building. He wanted it to be ‘off the grid’ as much a possible. Out of sight, out of mind. But it needed be cheap. It needed to be geographically near the main building so as not to screw up the commute for the team. It needed to be available now. But otherwise he just wanted a box. A room: light, with parking, cheap and available now.
0600 and the sun was up. He made an omelette, spread it with cashew butter and chopped banana; he was back on his gym regime and so needed to start eating more and more wisely. He sat outside with his food and drink. And he would start cycling everywhere.
He loaded the dishwasher and set it. He grabbed his bike hat, stuffed his backpack: water bottle, phone, MacBook, moleskine, pencil case, Huel bar and headed off. Over the last year he’d found a circuitous route which kept him away from the main car volume and worst of the traffic. He was at the office within 20 minutes and he’d kept his heart rate high according to his watch. Pausing he glugged water and opened up Google maps: he’d start at the office and head off in various directions.
